What do you want to measure?

Measure the emissions of a company, product or event

The questions adapt to your choice.
Pick a path to start the free calculator. What can you calculate with an online CO2 calculator? An online CO2 calculator can estimate emissions for three different areas: a whole company (energy, fleet, employee travel), a single product across its life cycle (materials, production, transport, end of life), or a corporate event (attendees, catering, set-up materials, overnight stays). Each path uses questions and emission factors specific to the chosen context.

Understanding emissions

Carbon footprint, LCA and Scope 1, 2, 3: a quick guide

The essential definitions to get your bearings before you measure your organisation's carbon footprint. What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 in emissions accounting? They are the three categories of emissions defined by the GHG Protocol, the most widely used international standard. Scope 1 covers direct emissions (boilers, fleet); Scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased energy (electricity); Scope 3 all other indirect emissions across the value chain — often the largest share for service companies.

Carbon footprint

The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by an organisation, directly and indirectly, expressed in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) — the unit that makes all greenhouse gases comparable.

Life Cycle Assessment

LCA is the "cradle-to-grave" methodology that analyses the environmental impact of a product or service, from raw material extraction to end of life.

Why measure them

Requests from customers and supply chains, the CSRD directive, tenders and ESG criteria, avoidable waste: measuring emissions is now part of running an SME.

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3?
Under the GHG Protocol, the most widely used standard for emissions accounting, emissions fall into three categories.
8%
17%
75%
SCOPE 18%
Direct

Direct emissions from sources you control: boilers, fleet, processes.

SCOPE 217%
Purchased energy

Indirect emissions from the energy you buy: electricity, district heating.

SCOPE 375%
Value chain

All other indirect emissions along the value chain.

According to the GHG Protocol, Scope 3 is the largest share of the overall carbon footprint for many organisations — the proportions shown are illustrative.

When an estimate isn't enough: the PRO analysis, reviewed by an expert

The free calculator gives you an order of magnitude. The PRO Calculator builds the complete inventory of your emissions — Scope 1, 2 and 3 — has it validated by a zeroCO2 expert and gives you a report with a reduction plan, item by item.

Human in the loop

An expert checks every figure

No result is delivered automatically. A zeroCO2 consultant checks your data, sources and emission factors, fixes any inconsistencies and signs off the final report. Plus a walkthrough call to go through the numbers together.

Scope 1, 2 and 3

The full boundary, not just what's visible

Direct emissions, purchased energy and — above all — your entire value chain: purchases, logistics, waste, services, use and end of life. For many companies Scope 3 is the biggest share: without it, the number doesn't hold up.

Frequently asked questions

Carbon footprint and LCA calculation: FAQs

What is a company carbon footprint, and why measure it?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, nitrous oxide and others — emitted directly or indirectly by an organisation, a product or an event, expressed in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq). The CO2eq unit makes all greenhouse gases comparable by using their global warming potential (GWP). Accounting follows the GHG Protocol, the most widely used international standard for businesses. Measuring your carbon footprint is now an essential step for ESG reporting, the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and requests from your supply chain: our business carbon footprint calculator makes that first step simple.

Is the carbon footprint calculator really free?

Yes. The Free version is completely free: no sign-up and no payment details. To send you the estimate and the PDF report, we only ask for your name, company and work email. It's an online carbon footprint calculator built for SMEs that want a first figure without committing to consultancy straight away.

How long does it take to calculate my company's CO2 emissions?

A few minutes. The online CO2 calculator walks you through simple questions on energy, fleet, employee commuting and business travel: no technical expertise needed. Your estimate in tonnes of CO2eq appears on screen straight away, with a breakdown of your main emission sources and a PDF report by email.

Do I need to know my exact consumption in kWh?

No. For each item you can enter the technical figure (kWh, km, m²) or simply the amount spent in euros: the calculator converts it into emissions automatically, using national average prices and up-to-date sector emission factors. One bill or a rough estimate is enough for a reliable indicative result.

Which emissions does the free version cover?

The Free version estimates Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, plus employee commuting and business travel: the sources that are easiest to gather and that carry real weight. For full Scope 3 accounting (the value chain), there's the PRO version.

What's the difference between a carbon footprint and an LCA?

A carbon footprint measures the climate-altering emissions of an organisation or activity. An LCA (Life Cycle Assessment, ISO 14040 and 14044) is broader: it assesses all the environmental impacts of a product across its entire life cycle, "from cradle to grave". Our product LCA calculator estimates the carbon footprint along the supply chain (materials, production, transport, end of life); a full multi-category LCA requires our consultancy service.

What's the difference between the Free and PRO versions?

The Free version gives you an instant, free estimate with a breakdown of your main emission sources and a PDF report. The PRO version (€1,500 + VAT) is an in-depth Scope 1, 2 and 3 analysis, with saved progress, human-in-the-loop review by the zeroCO2 team, a results walkthrough call and a tailored report with a reduction roadmap.

Are the results certified to ISO 14064 or 14067?

No. Neither the Free nor the PRO version includes ISO certification: they are estimation and analysis tools. Certification (ISO 14064 / 14067) is available only through a tailored consultancy programme with the zeroCO2 team.

Which sources and emission factors does the calculator use?

The calculation is based on average sector emission factors from recognised public sources: ISPRA (Italy's national emissions inventory), the IPCC (greenhouse gas emission factors) and the Ecoinvent database. The result is always shown as a min–max range with a methodology disclaimer: it's an indicative estimate, not a certified inventory.

Which businesses is the tool designed for?

It's designed for Italian SMEs (up to around 250 employees involved) and for smaller corporate events. For larger organisations or complex events we recommend a dedicated consultancy programme, because an online LCA and CO2 calculator couldn't guarantee a reliable estimate.

Can I offset the emissions I've calculated?

Yes. At the end of the calculation you'll find the option to offset through zeroCO2's high-social-impact reforestation projects. Offsetting doesn't replace reduction, but it's a concrete step for the emissions you can't eliminate yet.

What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the methodology that quantifies the environmental impacts of a product or service over its entire existence: raw material extraction, production, distribution, use and end of life (a "cradle-to-grave" approach). It is governed by the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and considers multiple impact categories, not just climate. Our product LCA calculator applies this framework in simplified form, estimating the carbon footprint of the supply chain; a full multi-category LCA requires a dedicated consultancy programme.

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3?

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources the company controls (boiler combustion, company fleet, industrial processes). Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased energy (electricity, district heating, cooling). Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions across the value chain: purchases, transport, product use, end of life. For many service organisations, Scope 3 is more than 70% of the total (source: GHG Protocol).
