WHAT IS ACTIVISM?

Local commitment, global vision.

The climate crisis is the challenge of our century. The responsibility lies with governments, institutions, and corporations, but also with us. As humans, we are the cause, but also the solution. By coming together we can make a difference and create a critical mass that can develop the positive changes our society needs.

What do we really mean when we talk about activism? Environmental activism includes all the actions by individuals or groups that promote social, political, and cultural change to protect the environment, by means of local actions and a comprehensive, long-term vision. Encouraging engagement can raise awareness and mobilize people to influence institutions, advocate for key environmental causes, and transform lives. Together we can promote local initiatives, spread knowledge, raise community awareness of environmental issues, and push policies that promote sustainable development.

WHO’S AN ACTIVIST?

Let’s uproot indifference.

Being an activist means activating people, leading them to deep reflection that awakens critical thinking on issues about which we simply can’t be indifferent.

Is that all? Well, yes! You don’t have to be a superhero to do something that really matters. Activists can be just anyone: the introverts, the extroverts, those in the city and those in a remote village in the countryside. Activism can also be done digitally, but we prefer to get our hands dirty with some soil!

Be part of a community

Many environmental associations are active in different cities around the world and you can take part in their initiatives all year round, without going too far from home. Choose the one you vibe with!

Join a green initiative

Every city has different initiatives available throughout the year, and many are probably right for you: from beach cleanups to urban tree planting, from repair workshops to used-clothing swap parties.

Use your creativity

Some people want to raise awareness on social media, some other hate it but may be ace at writing, filming, photographing, designing or creating events. What is your talent? Use it for your local community.

“Art is not a mirror for society but a hammer with which we can shape it.”

Art is a very powerful tool to communicate the climate challenges we face. The power of artivism lies in its ability to engage audiences emotionally, by stimulating active debate on social, environmental, and political issues and pushing citizens to action. Posters, illustrations, and graffiti become powerful tools to provoke thought, challenge the status quo, and promote positive social change.
