Important notes on food security

It is estimated that between 691 and 783 million people have suffered from hunger in 2022, and the most up-to-date projections speak of 600 million people being chronically undernourished in 2030. A peek inside these large numbers reveals important differences between different regions of the world. The limited but significant progress made in Asia and Latin America is flanked by major deteriorations in the Caribbean, West Asia and all of Africa.
Mass urbanisation makes it complex to ensure a healthy and affordable diet for all because of the greater availability and convenience of ready-made foods, which are often high in fat, sugar or salt, compared to the scarcity of vegetables and fruit.
The climate crisis is also closely linked to food security. On the one hand, increasingly extreme weather conditions – rising temperatures, disastrous storms, heavy rainfall and prolonged periods of drought – destroy crops, generating insecurity. On the other hand, intensive and often monoculture-based agri-food models contribute to climate change by degrading the soil and reducing biodiversity.
